With minimalism gaining in popularity, now is a wonderful time to start a podcast about minimalism. I am guessing minimalism is also a topic you are passionate about, which it makes it the perfect topic for you for a podcast. Because the more passionate you are about a subject, the easier it is to talk about. Plus, you will be able to share your knowledge and give listeners important tips and information.
So for the reasons, I am sure you want to get started on your podcast right away. But you’ll need to do a few things before you begin. Luckily, we have a list for you of what you’ll need to do and what you’ll need so you can start recording your podcast ASAP.
Step #1: Determine Your Podcast’s Focus
Do you want your podcast to be about minimalism in general? Or do you want it to be more specific? Perhaps you would prefer to talk about decluttering. Maybe your passion is minimalist interior design, minimalist fashion, or minimalist art. Maybe you embrace minimalism for the environmental impact and you want sustainability to be a part of your podcast focus. Perhaps you are a mom who wants to give tips to other moms or you are a traveler who wants to give tips to other minimalist travelers.
How broad or specific you want to get is all up to you, of course. But it’s good to have an idea of what you want to do before you start recording episodes.
One other thing you’ll want to think about is the format. Do you want to have different seasons focusing on a topic, or talk about different topics in each episode? Do you want to have a co-host or have guests you interview? This is an exciting part of the creative process, and of course, your podcast can evolve and change over time. But it’s good to have a general idea, especially before you name your podcast. Which brings me to my next point…
Step #2: Name Your Podcast
Naming your podcast is an important step, and one where you need to consider a number of factors.
First is your brand. Do you already have a brand online? Maybe you already have a popular TikTok account or blog. Then you want your podcast’s name to reflect your brand.
Another factor you’ll want to consider is what your podcast is about (see why it’s important to figure out your podcast’s focus before this step?). It’s good when your name tells listeners what your podcast is about. For example, “Minimalist Moms Podcast” tells new listeners this is a minimalism podcast aimed at moms.
Why that can be important is that when people are searching through Apple, Spotify or other podcast platforms for a new podcast to listen to, you want the right audience to notice your podcast name and become intrigued. If the right audience can find your podcast, then you are more likely to gain these new audience members as loyal listeners. This is important to grow your podcast, build your brand, and potentially make you more money. Which brings me to my next point.
Step #3: Determining If You’ll Make Money From Your Podcast
Now, you may be wanting to start a podcast just as a hobby and you have no interest in earning money from your podcast. If this is the case, you can just skip this step.
But you might want to earn money from your podcast. After all, podcasts can be quite profitable. We tell you about ways you can earn money from a podcast here.
If you do decide to earn money from your podcast, then you will need to protect yourself legally. You will need to register your business according to your local business laws.
You might want to protect yourself legally beyond that, though. When I start a new business, I always get an LLC. We talk about the benefits and disadvantages of an LLC here.
Step #4: Get Podcasting Tools
Now that have the legalities out of the way, it is almost time to start recording your podcasts. But first, you’ll need the right tools. That includes everything from a microphone to a pop filter. You can read our full list of podcasting tools here.
Step #5: Start Recording
Now it’s time to begin recording episodes of your brand new podcast! Good luck, and have fun!
