Are you always giving out parenting advice?  Do you already have a parenting blog and are looking to expand your brand?

Well, then, have you thought about having a parenting podcast?  A parenting podcast is a great way to give advice.  It can be a lot of fun and very fulfilling.

And quite frankly, it can be a great way to earn extra money.  We talk about how a podcast can be profitable here.  This could be a great side hustle on top of your regular job (or jobs) to make some extra money.  Or it could be a way to earn money while you stay home with your children.  And unlike a lot of businesses you could start, it’s not super expensive to begin (we’ll get into what you need later).

But first, let’s talk about what you first need to do before you start your podcast.

Step #1: Decide On A Focus

So you know you want a parenting podcast.  But what kind of format do you want?  Do you want to have guests on your podcast?  Do you want to host it with a co-host (or co-hosts)?  Or be the only host?  What kind of topics would you like to talk about?  This is the stage where you start brainstorming.

This is also a good time to decide if you want it to be a broad podcast about parenting or something more specific with parenting.  For example, the podcast “Motherhood in Black & White” has a focus on raising race-conscious children.  “Parenting Today’s Teens” deals more specifically with raising teenage children than children in general.  “TILT Parenting: Raising Differently Wired Kids” deals with raising kids with autism, ADHD, learning differences, anxiety, etc.

Of course, once again, you can do a more general parenting podcast.  You can let the podcast evolve as you continue to do it.  But if you have a specific point of view or topics you want to discuss in mind, now is a good time to think about it.  Because you might want it to be reflected in the name, and that is the next step.

Step #2: Come Up With A Name

Your podcast name is an important decision.  Ideally, your podcast name should let people know something about what your podcast is about so if your target audience see it suggested in Apple or IHeartRadio, they’ll know it’s a podcast aimed for them.

So for example, if you want to include your name in the podcast title, perhaps put something about parenting with it (unless of course you already have made a name for yourself in the blogging or influencer sphere).  For example, “Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe’s Lockdown Parenting Hell” has the podcast hosts’ names in the title, but it’s apparent that it is about parenting.

Though you do not have to have your name in the title.  Your podcasts’ name could deal with your subject matter (like the aforementioned “Parenting Today’s Teens”) or it could be cute or clever (like “Not Another Mummy Podcast”).  This is where you get to let your creativity shine because remember – the decision is yours!

Step #3: Protect Yourself Legally

Now that you have a name, you should register your name as a business if you are planning on making money from your podcast.  You should also protect yourself legally.  Whenever I have started a business, I always created an LLC.  I think LLCs offer the best form of protection.  I go over the benefits and disadvantages of starting an LLC here.

Step #4: Get The Right Tools

So you know how I mentioned it’s not that expensive to start a podcast?  Well, obviously I didn’t say it was free.  There are things you’ll need to have a good podcast.  You can read the full list of what you need to start a podcast here.

Step #5: Get Started

Once you have all the right tools, you can get started creating your podcast!  Good luck!
