Do you love music? Do you love talking about music? Then it sounds like you would enjoy having a music podcast! It is a wonderful way to share your love of music and/or the music industry with others.
But you may thinking starting your own podcast is too hard if you have no experience. Luckily, that is not the case. We can follow you through the whole process. But here’s what you’ll need to think about/decide/do before you get started recording your first episode.
What is Your Podcast About?
Before you start buying tools, you’ll need to get a rough idea of what your podcast is about. Maybe you want it to be about music in general.
But maybe you want it to be a bit more specific. Maybe you want it to be about a specific music genre, such as R&B, K-Pop, or country music. Maybe you want a podcast discussing a specific period of music history (like the 1990s grunge scene). Your whole podcast could be focused to a specific season or maybe you want to have a season for different eras. Or perhaps you want a podcast discussing current news.
Basically, this is the time you start thinking about all of this. You want to talk about something you are passionate about, because that will make it easier to keep coming up with episodes (and it will just be a lot more fun for you).
You’ll also want to start figuring out how you want your podcast to be structured. For example, do you want a co-host? Do you want special guests?
Once you’ve thought about all of this, you’ll want to come up with a name. A great way to choose a name is one that will tell potential podcast listeners roughly what your podcast is about before they even listen to an episode. That will make it easier for people looking through Apple, Spotify, etc. for a new podcast to see your podcast title and know this is something they’ll want to listen to.
For example, you can tell that “Rolling Stone Music Now” is about the band Rolling Stones. “Cocaine & Rhinestones: The History of Country Music” clearly lays out that the podcast will be discussing country music history. “Dad Bod Rap Pod” also lets you know it’s about rap music. And so on. You can make your title as clever or funny as you want – it’s all up to you!
Will You Earn Money From Your Podcast?
Another important question to ask yourself is whether or not you want to earn money from your podcast. Earning money from your podcast can of course be quite literally profitable. There are many ways to earn money from your podcast which we discuss here.
But if you do decide to earn money from your podcast, you will need to register yourself as a business for legal purposes. What that entails will depend on where you live so you’ll need to look up local laws on how to start a business.
I would also recommend getting an LLC. This is a great way to protect yourself legally. Say for example you have a podcast that reviews new albums. You don’t want a band suing you for defamation. An LLC is a good way to prevent you from losing your house or car or something like that. We go over the advantages and disadvantages of starting an LLC here.
What Tools Do You Need for Your Podcast?
Now that you’ve made these important decisions, you’re almost ready to start recording your own podcast. But there’s one last thing. There are certain tools you’ll need. Like a microphone to record your podcast. A pop filter to ensure good sound quality. Editing software to put your episodes together.
