Have you ever thought about starting a finance podcast? This is a popular podcast genre. Your podcast could be quite a profitable endeavor. We talk about how you can earn money from a podcast here. Having a finance podcast could be a great way to turn your expertise and unique point of view into a great side hustle – or perhaps even eventually your full-time job.
But the question is, where do you begin with starting your podcast? You may have no experience creating a podcast. And that’s okay. Because we are about to give you a step-by-step guide for starting your own podcast.
Figure Out Your Focus & Format
Now, eventually, we will talk about things like what physical things you need to get started. But before you start buying supplies, it’s time to start thinking about the focus of your podcast. Another way to think of this is your unique point of view.
Basically, what kind of finance podcast do you want to have? What do you want to focus on? Do you want to focus on reporting on the news from the financial sector? Maybe you want to give out stock investing tips. If so, is your podcast more tailored for beginners or people with experience investing?
Or maybe you want to focus on personal finance. Maybe you want to give tips to help people make better decisions with their money.
There is no wrong choice here, of course. Just choose what you are passionate about and where your expertise lies.
Another decision you should make during this stage is your format. Do you want to host the podcast by yourself, or with a partner? Do you want to have special guests for each podcast? These are all things you can think about. And of course, your podcast can change organically with time as you start producing more episodes. But it’s good to have a rough idea before the next step.
Choose Your Name
Now you see why choosing what your podcast is about is so important. Because the focus of your podcast is often apparent in your name. And that is a really good thing because it will make people interested in what you have to say more likely to find your podcast. Because unless you are a celebrity or you have a really strong social media or blog presence prior to starting the podcast, just naming it after yourself will make it harder for people to find you when they are scrolling through say Apple or IHeartMusic looking for a new podcast.
This is of course not to say you can’t use your name. But perhaps include something about your podcast with it. Take for example the podcast HerMoney with Jean Chatzky. This podcast title includes her name, but also shows her focus of finance advice for women.
Of course, you don’t have to include your name. You could choose a name that just is clever or says what your podcast about, like I Will Teach You To Be Rich. It is up to you how creative you want to be here.
Protect Yourself Legally
So now is the time to register as a business. You’ll need to check your local laws to figure out what you’ll need to do to register as a business.
Now, it should be stated that if you never plan on making money from your podcast you won’t need to start a business. But if you do plan on making money from your podcast, you will need to register as a business.
And on top of registering as a business, you may want to protect yourself legally. I always get LLCs when I start a new business. You can see the pros and cons of starting an LLC here.
