Do you enjoy basketball?  Do you enjoy listening to basketball podcasts?  If so, have you ever considered starting a basketball podcast?

Running a podcast can be a lot of fun.  It can also be profitable (we talk about how to make money podcasting here).  It can be a great side hustle – or maybe eventually your full-time job!

So how does one get started with a basketball podcast?  Well, let’s go over some steps!

Step #1: Come Up With A Focus

You might want to consider having a specific focus of your basketball podcast.  It could just be about playing basketball, such as giving tips for players.

But it could also be about specific basketball leagues.  You could have a podcast about the NBA, WNBA, men’s college basketball, women’s college basketball, etc.  If you focus on college basketball, you could even consider having a podcast solely about recruiting.

You could also focus on a specific team.  For example, you could make an entire podcast about the Los Angeles Lakers, South Carolina’s women’s basketball team, Duke’s men’s basketball team, the Chicago Sky, etc.

There are a lot of different directions you could take your podcast, and that is one of the most exciting things about having your own podcast!  You are the boss and you make the rules.

Step #2: Come Up With A Name

Once you know your focus, you can better determine a name for your podcast.  You can make it unique but not too unique.  You want people to know what your podcast is about.  For example, it’s very easy to understand what Shots Gotta Fall: A Penn State Basketball Podcast, Double Down WNBA Podcast, and Lakers Nation Podcast are about.

Step #3: Start a Business

It’s now time to protect yourself legally if you plan on making money from this podcast.  You can do that with an LLC.  That’s what I use whenever I start a business.  I go over the advantages and disadvantages of an LLC here.

Step #4: Get the Right Tools

Now it’s time to get the right tools to start your own podcast.  Some things you may have already thought about, like a microphone.  Other things you may not have thought about, like a pop filter.  See the full list of what you’ll need to start your podcast here.

Step #5: Start Your Podcast

Now it’s time for the fun part: starting your podcast!  Have fun and good luck!
