So you’ve decided to start selling tea from home! First of all, congratulations. Starting your own business is a very rewarding endeavor. There is a lot of pride and satisfaction you’ll feel in knowing you started your very own business. Doing this gives you a lot of control. And you could earn a lot of money from this business, which would obviously be wonderful!
But before you start your business, you need to make sure you can check off everything on this list. Please note we are more focusing on the business aspect than the actual process of making tea.
Create a Business Plan
Creating a business plan is an important step. It helps you figure out your short-term and long-term goals. This is the step too where you figure out your market and competition. It is also a crucial step if you are ever to obtain financing for your business. Here is a cheap business plan you can print off and fill out.
Protect Yourself Legally
It is important for anyone starting a business that they protect themselves legally. I personally recommend getting an LLC. I go over the benefits (and drawbacks) of getting an LLC here.
Obtain a Business License
Now, this really depends on where you live. But in most places, you’ll need a business license in order to sell tea. So you’ll need to check out the rules for your local city or county government.
Decide If You Want a Tea Certification
One way to clearly demonstrate to anyone who finds your website that you know your tea is to get a tea certificate. Not only that, but to get certified, you’ll take courses, and that can teach you a lot of valuable information.
Here are a few places to get certified:
- The International Tea Masters Association
- The Tea and Herbal Association of Canada
- World Tea Academy
Get A Logo
A logo is really important for branding your business. You can get a logo created here.
Set Up Your Online Store
If you are selling tea from home, then you will need to set up an online store. One way to easily do this without needing any experience is with Shopify. You can easily create your online store and customize it to your liking.
Additionally, they’ll provide you with all the tools you’ll need to sell tea online. For example, they make it easy for you to accept online payments (and without that, you won’t be able to make any money!). They also offer you other great features like inventory management tools and analytics & reporting options.
Additionally, they’ll help you sell your products on online marketplaces such as TikTok, Amazon, Ebay, Walmart, Etsy, Google Products, etc. This is a great way to increase your sales.
You can get started with Shopify here.
Set Up Social Media Accounts
It is also important that you start your social media accounts as soon as you start your business. Your social media accounts are a wonderful way to promote your business, especially since it is free to have a social media account. And if you set up a Facebook Business Page and Shops on Instagram, you can even sell your products through social media.
These are important things you’ll need before you can start your exciting new business. And if you want so more tips, then check out The Tea Business Toolbox: Tools for Building a Successful Tea Company.
